What is Laparoscopy?

A laparoscopy is a type of exploratory surgical procedure that uses a laparoscope. The surgeon explores the abdominal and pelvic cavities through one or two keyhole-shaped incisions. This is the least invasive alternative to a laparotomy. This is usually done for diagnostic purposes, to look for problems that couldn't be found with imaging tests. During the exam, the surgeon may take tissue samples for a biopsy. They can also treat minor problems during laparoscopy, such as removing growths or blockages found during the exam.
