Fundoplication surgery wraps the upper stomach around the lower esophagus. It reduces the amount of acid that enters the esophagus from the stomach. This procedure can: Eliminate gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptoms that are not relieved by medication.

Who needs a fundoplication?

Nissen fundoplication is a surgery to treat GERD. If you have acid reflux that has not responded to medication or other noninvasive treatment, your healthcare provider may recommend surgery. Often, surgeons use a laparoscopic approach to Nissen fundoplication.
