A bile drain is a thin, hollow, flexible tube with several small holes on the sides. A bile drain is used when too much bile builds up in the bile ducts. When something blocks the common bile duct, bile can build up in the liver. This can lead to jaundice, a condition in which the skin and whites of the eyes turn yellow. When the bile duct is blocked, a bile drain helps bile flow from the liver to the intestines. Depending on the type of bile duct, it may be connected to a drainage bag outside the body.
