Extended cholecystectomy is often done in patients with gallbladder cancer to reduce the risk of it coming back. The gallbladder, part of the liver, and several lymph nodes are removed. In some cases, major surgery may be needed to remove any of the following: a larger portion of the liver (wedge resection), an entire lobe of the liver (hepatic lobectomy), the common bile duct, some ligaments, extra lymph nodes, the pancreas, the duodenum and all other areas where the disease occurs.
