A colostomy is an operation in which the large intestine is redirected from its normal route through the anus to a new opening in the abdominal wall. The opening is called a stoma. The large intestine, where feces is formed, now expels feces through your stoma instead of your anus. You may need to wear a colostomy bag to catch feces when you go out. Some people only have a colostomy for a few months, others need it for life.
A colostomy often follows a colectomy, a procedure to remove part or all of the colon. Other conditions may require you to temporarily or permanently stop using your colon. After surgery, "colostomy" also refers to your newly rerouted colon. Your doctor will explain to you how to live and take care of your colostomy.
